Faced with the climate emergency, biodiversity loss and social inequalities, education in Luxembourg is called upon to play a central role in ecological and social transformation. ESD (education for sustainable development) is no longer an optional extra, but an essential foundation for educating critical, caring and resilient citizens.
Learning objectives
- Cross-curricular integration of sustainable development across all subjects.
- Developing 21st-century skills : critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and civic engagement.
- Continuing professional development for teachers, co-designed with IFEN, SNJ and SCRIPT.
- Encouraging educational innovation, supported by practical pilot projects.

How can we take part?
Proposed ways to get involved
Secondary schools can choose their level of involvement:
- Host events (workshops, courses and forums).
- Lead innovative projects (fablabs, environmental management, new modules…).
- Include teachers in training cohorts (with ministerial support).
- Participate in the collaborative platform : peer exchange and shared resources.
A flexible, modular approach
The programme follows a principle ofgradual inclusion and tailored participation, with methodological support and a flexible timetable. It is designed to value both experienced schools and those new to ESD.
CONSISTENCY WITH NATIONAL PRIORITIES
Strategic alignment
- With the National ESD Strategy, the National Sustainable Development Plan 2030 and the SDGs, particularly target 4.7.
- In line with MENJE priorities on innovative teaching and cross-curricular skills.
- Contributing to a more inclusive, more connected school through digital transition, and one more open to the world.
A driver of educational transformation
The programme combines educational quality, academic achievement, well-being, active citizenship and local connections. It helps educate engaged young people who can build a fair and sustainable future.
The ministry calls on secondary school leaders to join this initiative from 2025, with tailored support and a national network committed to building schools capable of meeting the ecological and social challenges of the 21st century.
