Why is Äerdschëff leading MOBILAB?

What does this have to do with the Äerdschëff building?

Why would an association connected to an experimental building take an interest in mobility? Because the building raises a question that goes beyond construction: what does it take to make a less resource-intensive way of living a real possibility in everyday life?

At Äerdschëff, we explore this question through materials, water, energy and the ways people use the building. With MOBILAB, we extend it to everyday travel. The objects change, but our approach remains the same: experimenting, learning and understanding the conditions that allow an alternative to work over time.

A building does not run itself

Bioclimatic design, reused materials and efficient equipment are not enough to keep a place running. People need to understand how it works, maintain its systems, pass on practical knowledge, fund repairs and share responsibilities.

The building therefore provides a setting for learning. It allows us to examine technical choices alongside the human arrangements they depend on. Seeking greater autonomy does not remove our connections with others: it encourages us to understand them better.

Äerdschëff asbl wants to carry this connection between practical experimentation, education and collective inquiry forward through MOBILAB.

Travelling differently raises similar questions

A lighter vehicle cannot, on its own, change how a day works. People still need to take their children places, carry shopping, get to work, park, maintain the vehicle and find a solution when something unexpected happens.

Light intermediate vehicles, known in French as vélis, provide a starting point for exploring these questions. Their unfamiliarity makes us notice conditions we tend to overlook with cars: repair services, insurance, rules, habits and the learning that makes their use possible.

A building and a vehicle serve different purposes and face different constraints. Yet both invite us to look beyond their technical specifications: who can use them, for which activities, with what resources and what support?

Experimenting without assuming the outcome

With MOBILAB, our aim is not to present a vehicle as a universal solution. It is to create opportunities to try things out, understand and discuss what makes other ways of travelling possible, or what prevents them.

A trial may reveal a useful application, a need for learning, a missing service or a limit that is difficult to overcome. It may also show that a solution is unsuitable for certain situations. These findings are part of the learning process.

This is why Äerdschëff asbl is leading this project: to extend beyond the building’s walls an approach that connects everyday needs, the resources they require and the collective conditions for change. The building is one setting for experimentation. MOBILAB opens up another.
