the becoming of the Äerdschëff can be divided into three phases: the dreaming and design phase (2014-2017), the construction phase (2019-2021), and the post-construction phase (2020-).

During the LEADER funding phase (2015-2016), we designed the project and trained two people with Biotecture in New Mexico (USA) at the Earthship Academy (October 2016). Thanks to LEADER funding, we were able to set up the initial budget and design, and to receive additional funding both from the Oeuvre nationale de Secours Grande Duchesse Charlotte (a philanthropic foundation) and from the Ministry for Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development for the construction. We got the offer from Atert Lycée Redange (ALR), the secondary school in Redange, to use public land and gathered a citizen steering group. We made a model of the Äerdschëff and showed it in various fairs and at school. The approach was to make the design as participatory as possible and the team ensured that communication between the professionals and the citizens was happening.

Between 2016 and 2019, we designed the adaptations for the Luxembourgish earthship, and sought to obtain the permits for commencing construction. Given the pioneer nature of the project, this was a fairly lengthy process. We collected and stored various reclaimed building materials. In 2019, we used the dry, hot summer to build the foundations with a bunch of international and local volunteers. This was a large celebration with many people from around the world who joined for a sort of camp during the summer to help build.

In 2020, we continued building the outer shell (roof structure, flooring, clay plastering, cisterns and outer drainage) and despite the pandemic, things moved along. As of December 2020, we are nearing completion of the building in about a years’ time. In 2020, we got awarded the prestigious PSP-Flagship programme by the National Research Fund to develop educational programmes around circular design for teenagers (Äerdschëff Circular and Regenerative Science).

The Äerdschëff is a pioneering educational space
for learning, researching and teaching circular economy.

This Luxembourgish adaptation of the Äerdschëff
is a ground-breaking pilot project
that gives new impulses in terms of circular design.

Not only have we recovered building materials that are thrown out daily on other construction sites, but we have been implementing components that follow the logic of circular economy and permaculture (ecological and social design inspired by nature). This means that all systems and components of the Äerdschëff are considered in a systemic way, including not just the materials and technical aspects, but also the social aspects. The Äerdschëff is built on state-owned land, next to Atert Lycée Redange (ALR), a secondary school with a strong anchor in the Western region of Luxembourg, and that is offering, alongside more traditional secondary diploma pathways, renewable energy vocational training to youngsters.

Thanks to generous funding from LEADER, the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development (MECDD) Kyoto Fund and the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande- Duchesse Charlotte , CELL has been able to steer this ambitious pilot project through the rough waters of getting building permits, and narrow straits of expanding what is possible in the legislative world. CELL has been able to count on the support of a growing Äerdschëff community base that has lent a hand in gathering the materials and navigating the pilot group as well as participating with excitement and joy in the building phase.

Our Äerdschëff is a healthy and comfortable, self-sufficient space and a pioneering centre for the Redange region for human learning and flourishing in an environmentally respectful way.

The Äerdschëff, one of the first public earthship-inspired buildings in the world, will be a hub for social diversity and a showcase for a cultural transition to a low-impact world. We will create a space of sharing that awaken the desire of education in each one of our visitors, regardless of their age, their backgrounds and their place of origin. It is in this spirit that we are putting into practice notions of solidarity, respect, dignity and mobilisation. The mission of Äerdschëff is to create relationships between people and create community.

Through this space open to all, we want to create social relationships within families, villages and the region. Designed for children and adults of all ages and mobilities, the Äerdschëff will be an educational centre focused on ecology, self-expression and diversity. The Äerdschëff will also create many open spaces for each citizen to share knowledge and experience: art exhibitions, cooperative games, creative weeks, workshops, courses and seminars, concerts, screenings, … This is a place destined to document, educate and research as well as to stimulate curiosity and creativity in order to develop and be able to share one’s own skills and knowledge. In and around the Äerdschëff, the energy and citizen-led transition for a resilient and regenerative future is lived and showcased.
